VNA & Blue Water Hospice leadership honors staff and volunteers quarterly through the ‘Shining Star’ program, recognizing the extras they do for each other, their patients, and the community.
Let’s get to know Betsy!
What do you do at VNA & BWH?
I volunteer as a hair stylist to hospice patients in the community and at the Hospice Home. I also visit with patients to give caregivers a break.
What do you like best about your position at VNA & BWH?
I started because I knew the volunteer coordinator at the time. She got me involved using my passion of connecting with people while I cut their hair. Being a hairdresser – they share things with me they don’t share with others. It’s quite amazing. Many times, it’s spiritual things. I want them to feel at ease with me…and know they can talk about anything.
One gentleman I sat with designed computer programs in the 50’s. Now, his family had heard the stories – but I was a new ear to listen…he just wanted to talk. I can listen…I like to listen!
Why did you choose this type of work?
I’ve understood the importance of hospice for a long time. I had two brothers; both have passed. One suffered without end-of-life care such as hospice. Once I knew about it, we got my other brother under hospice care early to avoid unnecessary suffering.
Many people don’t understand hospice care. Several of my friends question why I volunteer for hospice. I wish people could understand what a positive experience it is for me. Hospice shouldn’t be a dirty word. It can be a very positive experience to help people get through end-of-life with a loved one.
I feel if you have a gift you need to use it. Because of some health issues, I can no longer work like I used to do; however, I can provide a couple haircuts a day. It makes me proud knowing that I can give someone a haircut and make them feel better. It’s a small thing that I can do to make a big impact.
Heidi recognized Betsy as a Shining Star!
“Betsy is our Blue Water Hospice Hair Stylist. She makes our patients feel handsome/beautiful with her no cost haircuts. Yes, I said no cost! When Betsy joined our program back in October 2008, she wanted to provide this service to our patients that were homebound and could not get out to see their hair stylist anymore. Betsy keeps her license renewed even after retirement to keep providing that wonderful service to our patients. She travels to our community and hospice home patients. When there is a haircut requested, Betsy is good about scheduling a visit in a timely manner. Betsy has a good listening ear and an awesome heart when interacting with our patients’ families. Betsy is an example of a Shining Star!
