VNA & Blue Water Hospice leadership honors staff quarterly through the ‘Shining Star’ program, recognizing the extras they do for each other, their patients, and the community.
Let’s get to know Sheila!
Sheila is the Hospice Liaison and has been with VNA & Blue Water Hospice since October 2016.
What do you do at VNA & BWH?
I meet with patients and families regarding hospice services. When a patient is ready to enter into hospice care, either at our Blue Water Hospice Home or within their own home or facility, I coordinate a smooth transition into hospice and order any needed durable medical equipment (DME). I work with referral services such as case managers, social workers, etc. to discuss hospice care or coordinate transition from one point of care to hospice care.
Why did you choose this type of work?
Prior to nursing, I was working in a factory, I wasn’t satisfied and knew that industry wasn’t for me. I wanted to do something that made a difference in my community. I was a mom and whatever I pursued needed to be local and affordable, so I chose SC4.
I chose hospice specifically because I knew I could help people navigate these difficult times by providing comfort and reassurance, making the transition as smooth as possible.
Why do you choose to work at VNA & BWH?
Honestly, the reputation in the community! Prior to VNA, I was at a nursing facility and first had contact with VNA & Blue Water Hospice when hospice staff came in to treat patients. They did a great job, and I was impressed with them and it piqued my interest to pivot my career. I left my previous career because I wanted to be more involved in my community and this was a direct way to do that. I felt I could make a more positive impact on more people in hospice care. As a liaison, I’m communicating with many patients and families daily and as a part of a team, guide them through the end-of-life process.
What is a favorite memory you have of work?
So many good memories, it’s hard to pick just one! But my favorite part of my job is the conversations with patients and family members – hearing their stories. I like asking couples how they met, you see a twinkle in their eye, so precious. You see this elderly couple, but when they tell me their story, you see them as that young couple again – it’s very endearing. I feel a connection with them.
Jessica recognized Sheila as a Shining Star!
Sheila always goes above and beyond to help her fellow co-workers in any way possible. This could be from covering intake, helping in the hospice home, helping the Home Health team, or even hitting the pavement in the community. She is always willing to lend a helping hand. She is a true Shining Star and a true team player and an asset to the agency!
